On the last day of 2008, we packed up the car, picked up some friends & then drove on down to a little port on the coast of Aichi-ken not too far from Nagoya. We then boarded a small boat for a quick ten minute trip to Himakajima, a tiny little island with a lot to offer.

Himakajima is famous for it's seafood, & most predominantly.. the octopus!

Himakajima is dotted with old fishing shacks, new residences & small hotels.. I particularly liked this weather beaten old place. I told Aki she could stay the night there if she wanted but she quickly told me to GFM.

After checking in to our hotel and taking a bath, which was on the top floor & had a beautiful view of the sea, we had an extremely delicious dinner. It would probably have been the most delicious seafood I can ever remember eating.. apart from this damn thing. The top of it tasted great but the end tasted like shit.. & for a good reason too.

We also ate.. well we ate half anyway.. a juicy boiled octopus.

Then it was back to the room to chat, drink, & see in the new year! Little Mio also entertained us with some singing & dancing.

As part of a Japanese tradition we ate soba noodles around midnight.

Yoshi & I then got up at around 6am to walk around to the other side of the island & watch the sunrise for the first time in 2009. We each made wishes.. contemplated the future & then returned to the hotel for...

Breakfast!! There were bits & pieces of so many different things that I don't know where to start describing them all. So I wont. But as you can see there is a veritable plethora of taste sensations to be had.. all of which went down surprisingly well after drinking a bottle of whiskey the night before.

Soon, the time came where we had to board the boat back to the mainland & back to reality.

Reflecting on the years past & contemplating the endless possibilities for the future.

Just before we loaded up the car to return home, I thought about buying a dried octopus to take back as a souvenir. But then the 5000yen price tag & wondering what the hell I would actually do with the thing kinda put me off.

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you have a great & safe one!!
